Basic Grammar, Yes/No Questions
Yes/No Questions are just questions where the answer is yes or not.
There are 3 rules for creating yes/no questions. For lower level grammar, we will look at just the simple tenses of simple present, present progressive, simple past and future. These rules do remain the same for the other more complex tenses.
Rule 1: Move to be (am/is/are/was/were) to the front
Example: My dog is a cute dog.
Is your dog a cute dog? (We usually change “my” to “your.”)
Rule 2: If 2 parts to the verb like “will go,” move the first part.
Example: I will go to a movie this weekend.
Will you go to a movie this weekend? (We usually change “I” to “you”).
Rule 3: Other. Use do or does for present and did for past.
For simple present, please make sure the verb has no “s” for simple present.
For singular subjects, use Does + singular subject + verb (no s) + rest of sentence?
Example: My dog loves to play.
Does your dog love to play?
For plural subjects for simple present, use Do + plural subject + verb (no s) + rest of sentence?
Example: My friends love to go to movies.
Do your friends love to go to movies?
For simple past, please make sure the verb has no past tense form. Use Did + subject + verb (no past) + rest of sentence?
Example: My dog played with a ball yesterday.
Did your dog play with a ball yesterday?
