Next Type: Unexpected Result

No matter what the type of writing, we often use unexpected result. Now some people call this opposition or a type of contrast. I will call it unexpected result because the meaning is unexpected. I am cold but I am not wearing a coat.

Most people wear a coat when they're cold so the meaning here is unexpected.

So how do we make the grammar of our writing more sophisticated?

We look at the structures in our writing that are to the left side of our chart and change them to the structures to the right side of our chart that are more sophisticated.

So let's look at our chart:

FANBOYS TRANSITIONS ADV. CLAUSES MOVE A TRANSITION REDUCING ADVERB PHRASE

but/yet however although however keep despite or in spite of

nevertheless though nevertheless

even though

despite the fact that

in spite of the fact that

So in your writing, look for the 3 structures on the left side and change them to the 3 structures on the right side.

Let's practice:

Combine the sentences in the ways provided:

A.John was tired. He still came to class.

1.Add fanboys: but/yet __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Add a transition: however/nevertheless __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3.Add an adverb clause: although/thought/even though/despite the fact/in spite of the fact that __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4.Move the transition:__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5.Reduce the adverb clause:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

6.Add an adverb phrase/prepositional phrase: despite/in spite of________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

B. My niece hates chemistry. She still passed her chemistry classes.

2. Add a transition: however/nevertheless __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3.Add an adverb clause: although/thought/even though/despite the fact/in spite of the fact that __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4.Move the transition:__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5.Reduce the adverb clause:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

6.Add an adverb phrase/prepositional phrase: despite/in spite of________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

So in this lesson, we looked at the chart for unexpected result and practiced applying that chart. If you would like to know the answers, please comment here and I will post them.
