GRE: Step 1: Analytical

You got to realize that the ideas and evidence is most illogical.

I.What are they testing you on?

For this topic, they give you a brief case and you have to analyze the case. They are testing you on your ability to not just organize and present content but to detect illogical arguments.

What are some common illogical type arguments?

1.False cause.

Example 1: I ate a hamburger from McDonald's. I got sick. The hamburger made me sick.

Example 2: I have gone to the GT Football game 3 times. They have won every time I have gone. I helped them win.

2.False comparison. You can also compare something to another thing to make the first one look better even though they are not actually related.

Obviously, you can see this a lot in commercials. You look at a commercial and the size of the produce like a hamburger is huge but when you go and buy one, it can be a lot smaller. http://viralscape.com/fast-food-ads-vs-reality/

3.Either...or. Here the writer says that you have only two choices and there is not a third option when actually there is. Please look at the samples: Can you see how there are other choices?

Example 1: The lake is polluted so we need to clean the lake or no one will swim in it.

Example 2: Either you love to eat donuts or you are just wrong.

Those are 3 of the top ways in which the GRE analytical is just wrong.
