IELTS: Writing the first sentence and practice


You don't need a pen but you do need an easy way to figure out how to write each part of IELTS. Let's review how to write the first sentence and practice writing it for task 1.

FIRST SENTENCE: The first sentence has two parts: the vocabulary + the title and/or description.

FIRST PART: Vocabulary for main idea, your first sentence. The title is the main idea and it should begin with any of the following vocabulary.

  • The graph, table, chart or diagram shows/indicates/describes...

  • According to this graph, it shows/indicates/describes

  • This is a chart of

SECOND PART: THEN ADD THE TITLE AND/OR DESCRIPTiON.

Note: For the ending of the first sentence, you can copy the title.

Note: According to the official website, in task 1, you will write about a graph, table, chart or diagram and explain the information in your own words. https://www.ielts.org/about-the-test/test-format

Here are some samples:

  1. The graph indicates the number of men and women in further education in Britain in three time periods and whether they were studying full-time or part-time.

  2. According to the graph, it describes the number of males and females in further education in Great Britain in three different time periods and indicates whether they were studying full or part time.

  3. This is a chart of the number of men and women in further education in Britain in three time periods and whether they were studying full-time or part-time.

Now let's look at some examples and practice:

Let's write a sample for sentence 1. Remember we need two parts to create the first sentence: the vocabulary + the title and/or description.

FIRST PART: SO BEGIN WITH ONE OF THE FOLLOWING VOCABULARY EXPRESSIONS.

  • The graph, table, chart or diagram shows/indicates/describes...

  • According to this graph, it shows/indicates/describes

  • This is a chart of

SECOND PART: THEN ADD THE TITLE AND/OR DESCRIPTION

The title is the favorite leisure activities of dogs and cats, 2007.

So let's put the two together:

The graph shows the favorite leisure activities of dogs and cats in 2007.
